One of the worst things that you can do is to take the first credit card you’re offered. You should always read the fine print and ask lot’s of questions. Look for credit cards that offer good benefits such as no annual fee, low interest rates and rewards.
If you are offered a card that has a promotional interest rate, make sure you know all the terms before accepting it. You should find out when the low introductory interest rate will expire. Most companies will apply all of your payments to the lowest interest first leaving any purchases after the expiration date to collect more interest.
Ask if there are going to be any type of fees or charges and if so how much they’ll be. Along with annual fees, some companies charge application fees. You’ll also want to find out how much late payment fees, over the limit fees, service charges and other fees are going to cost.
Find out when the company starts to charge you interest. Some will charge interest from the date you make a purchase, but some don’t add interest until the billing date. Getting all the information up front can help you make the smartest choices in selecting the right credit card for you.
